Help : using, saving and printing the Book
-
using The Curry House Cookery Book

Can I access the recipes in html (Web) format rather than in PDF format which requires the Adobe Reader?

No. The Curry House Cookery Book is only available in PDF format with the exception of the Contents page which comes in both formats.

So why is the book in PDF format rather than standard html or plain text?

There are 3 main reasons :
  1. PDF is the de facto standard for e-books

  2. html documents are notoriously unpredictable when it comes to being printed. Different browsers, different versions of the same browser and different operating systems cope with html documents in their own idiosyncratic way. The majority of registered users will want to print the recipes for use in the kitchen so it was important to use a format which produces reliable and accurate prints every time.

  3. There is elementary security embedded into PDF files which prevents unscrupulous people cutting and pasting the content into other applications or removing the copyright notices for illegal distribution.

Can I let my friends use my login and password?

No. Your License Agreement does not allow you to do that. You do not own the book in the same way you would if you bought a physical copy from a bookshop. You will have purchased a non-transferrable and non-exclusive license to access The Curry House Premium Area. The Book is available for all registered users to read, download and print for personal use. It may not be shared or distributed.

Will I be able to sell my copy of the book to someone else if I don't need it any more?

It may not be distributed or sold.

What's all this in the License Agreement about cutting off my registration if my account shows "suspicious activity"?

It's a security measure built into our registration management software. If you've paid good money for your registration would you want a bunch of freeloaders using someone else's registration without paying? No, nor do I. What the software does is identify accounts that are showing unusual activity such as simultaneous logins, logins made through multiple service providers or IP addresses and excessive downloads. If you do happen to get cut off because your account shows this pattern of unusual activity you will be emailed immediately and asked to explain what was going on before you can be re-instated.

It is very unlikely that any registered user will be cut off just for using the Premium Area to its maximum capabilities (unless I set the parameters too low in which case you'll get a grovelling email from me and immediate re-instatement!).

saving and printing the Book

Am I allowed to create my own copy of The Curry House Cookery Book on my computer?

Yes, your license entitles to keep one full copy of the Book on your computer. What you cannot do is share the files you have saved with friends or make them public in any way. You may also make one backup copy of the Book on removable media but, again, you may only do this for your own personal use.

Does the book come as one large file?

No, the file would be massive. The manuscript of the book runs to 340 pages and contains 72,000 words!

The book comes as separate sections. Each recipe and each descriptive section comes as one PDF file N.B. not in proprietary e-book format; just standard PDF files.

My reckoning was that most people don't read cookery books as a whole but rather dip in and out as particular bits interest them. Why wait for hours for the whole book to download when you can get the recipe you need in a few minutes?

You don't have to worry about the recipes becoming unavailable. If we ever decided, for whatever reason, to close down the Premium Area we have guaranteed in our License Agreement that we would give all registered users at least one month's notice in which to download any files they have missing.

I'm not very technically minded. How will I be able to save and print the recipes once I've become a registered user?

It's not difficult at all. There are more detailed Help pages in the Premium Area covering just this sort of question. But, for now, try the following.

Download our Test File. If your computer can't display the Test File then go to the Help page for the Adobe Reader.

Downloading the Test File should launch the Adobe Acrobat Reader within your browser window (if it doesn't and your computer asks you if you want to save the file or use the Reader to view the file then choose the latter option)

To save the Test File click the "save" icon on the Adobe Reader toolbar (or your browser's "file : save as.." option if you prefer) and save the file in a spare folder.

To print the Test File properly you must print it by CLICKING THE "print" ICON ON THE TOOLBAR OF THE ADOBE ACROBAT READER and not from your browser's toolbar.

That's all there is to it.

n.b. - please make sure you are certain your computer can handle PDF files BEFORE you register because we cannot give refunds once you have registered.
